Introduction to Lakeland

Lakeland Leather is a family business and we like to feel is a happy, lively place in to work. It all started back in 1955 when Jack Standring opened his first shop in Ambleside. Jack was an adventurer: happiest heading for the nearest Lakeland peak with a rope thrown across his shoulder. This spirit for adventure is the lifeblood of Lakeland and something we look for in anyone that wishes to join our business. Our passion is leather goods; and when you sell leather no two items are the same. Every hide we buy is unique and needs the eye of an expert to get the beauty to reveal itself. This is our daily adventure and we love it!

The Lakeland Package

Training

When you join Lakeland, you will receive thorough training in all aspects of a sales assistant's job, so that you will enjoy your work and achieve the satisfaction of a "job well done". We place great emphasis on training and ensure all our sales staff have the opportunity to complete our comprehensive training plan and attend regular and ongoing training sessions.

Staff Discount

Staff benefit from a discount on clothing and other items bought both for themselves or as a present for family members.

Wages

Wages will be commensurate with experience and are paid monthly directly into your bank account. Future rates of pay depend entirely upon individual effort and improved effectiveness with appraisal (and re-grading where applicable).

Bonus Scheme

Lakeland operates a generous bonus scheme which is paid monthly as achieved.

Bank Holiday Supplements

Because of the nature of the retail business, there are times when staff are expected to work Bank Holidays. Full-time staff and part-time staff receive generous supplements when working these days.

Lunch Breaks / Coffee Breaks

All Lakeland shops have a fully fitted kitchen (complete with microwave) and the normal lunch break is half an hour. There are two 10 minute breaks during the day, depending on hours worked, and tea and coffee are provided free.

Full-Time Staff

Hours

The opening hours of our shops depend upon the time of the year and the location. Normal hours of work are 9.30am–5.30pm during the week days and 9.00am–5.30pm on Saturdays. However, each shop is looked at individually and hours are arranged according to the trading pattern of the town.

Holidays with Pay

All full-time staff have 5 weeks, 3 days paid holiday, i.e. 28 days, during the first year, which increases to 6 weeks, 3 days after 6 years (this includes Bank Holidays).

Staff Dress

This consists of outfits chosen from our stock and a generous allowance is given each season.

Part-Time Staff

Hours

Part-time hours are planned around business needs, however we try to take into account personal circumstances.

On joining the company will be providing a comprehensive training programme and as a consequence your hours will need to temporarily increase.

There may be time when shops are short-staffed and managers would, therefore like to be able to call on part-timers to do extra hours, e.g. sale time, staff absences due to sickness, etc.
