Not quite sure when to reach for your black leather biker jacket out of the wardrobe and make full use of it? Or are you uncertain of how and when to wear it? Our in-house stylist Kate Houghton has a few style recommendations for all things black leather biker…
As we’ve said countless times before a leather biker jacket is a staple, and in black, there’s no other garment that defines capsule wardrobe piece better. It’s transcended from the motorcycle era to Hollywood (YES to Sandy’s jaw-dropping transformation in Grease) to fashion icon, favourited by the likes of Kate Moss and Winona Ryder.
Surpassing connotations of rebellion and eras of mods, punk and rock, no other outerwear item holds so much meaning and authenticity. And thankfully, the classic details and timeless aesthetic has placed itself rightfully so as a clothing staple for everyone.
“A leather jacket of a good quality is soft and supple to the touch,” says Kate, Lakeland Leather’s stylist. “The craftsmanship will be seamless, with minimal pieces used and few seams. These jackets will last you a lifetime if cared for properly. A cheaply made garment will have many seams in the hope to save costs by using as much hide as possible during production.”
Once known as an alternative, edgy piece it’s now an essential with many ways to style. Kate says “It’s simple. Biker jackets can add a needed youthful edge to an otherwise standard outfit or can help standardise an otherwise vibrant ensemble.”
“It really is appropriate for almost every season – avoid the torrential rain though… at all costs. One of the reasons why a leather jacket is my go-to is its ability to naturally ‘lend’ to the wearer, creating a unique fit and it has great capability to age beautifully.”
A leather biker immediately makes for a timeless on-trend outfit. Kate believes “Leather jackets work well for layering. Whether that’s over a polo neck for in-between seasons or a textured knit for a cosy look. Exploring all layer options and textures is a must.”
“If your leather biker is a slimmer fitting jacket, balance out the bottom half by wearing a wider fitting trouser - jean, linen or tailored pant.”
“For an ultimately casual ‘just rolled out of bed and absolutely didn’t plan my outfit-esque look’ jeans and a plain, relaxed-fit t-shirt works every time. Low key yet undoubtedly chic.”
“And for the evening, throw it on over your black dress for a head-turning look that you’ll feel so confident in.”
Kate’s must-have this season is the Glebe, “crafted from nappa leather it’s so soft to touch and the shorter length works well with my high-waist, midi skirts for the summer.”
