The off the beaten track guide to Southport

11th July 2018

Boasting a sandy coastline and Britain’s oldest iron pier, Southport is a quaint seaside town. The newest addition to our series of "Off the Beaten Track" blogs, we feature Southport and the hidden gems you need to know about.

The traditional seaside resort offers the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. Celebrated for its award-winning beaches and sand dunes, Southport is an often forgotten destination on the North West coastline.

Botanic Gardens

Renowned for its spectacular floral displays, the Botanic Garden is a short five minute drive from the centre of Southport. It is bursting with well-maintained floral splendour and colourful award winning displays. Winding through the parks is the garden's lake and multitude of flat pathways. Enjoy a gentle stroll and amongst the displays, the Victorian fernery and aviary. Open to the public every day, the gardens are maintained by a small army of dedicated volunteers.

And because the equator runs through Southport’s Botanic Gardens you can play on the swings in the Northern Hemisphere and then feed the ducks in the Southern Hemisphere in a single afternoon.

Throughout the year there's a regular programme of events for everyone to enjoy. This place is a true hidden gem and well worth a visit if you're in Southport.

Southport Pier

Breathe in some of that fresh sea air with a stride along the second longest pier in Britain. Now a Grade II listed structure, the Southport Pier Trust gained sufficient funding for a total redevelopment. Stroll to the end of the pier (now 1,000 metres long) with some local fish and chips and you'll be rewarded with magnificent views. If that sounds too strenuous, hop on the pier tram (missing out on your Fitbit steps), and grab a cup of tea in the pavilion.

Wesley Street

Known as the village within the town, Wesley Street is a collection of independent shops painted in pretty pastel colours. Accredited with numerous awards for floral displays, community spirit and the Best Neighbourhood in 2014, why wouldn’t you want to visit? All 22 shops are locally owned and provide a personal service with unique products. Wesley Street is a feast for your shopping senses.

Chocolate Whirled

Who doesn’t love all things chocolate? With a passion for using the finest Belgium chocolate to create unique and bespoke products, husband and wife team, Simon and Laura created Chocolate Whirled. Initially a home-run 'hobby', it quickly evolved into a full-time business. Now based on Manchester Road the couple not only sell a variety of mouth-watering chocolates, hot chocolates, birthday 'cakes' and waffles, but run chocolatier masterclasses for both adults and children.

You simply won’t be able to walk by without trying something!

England's Golf Capital (and so much more)

We didn't even touch on golf! If you can fit a round in, then Royal Birkdale is supposed to be a decent course. Southport has an extremely busy events calendar. From the annual Food and Drink festival, to the Airshow, the Musical Fireworks Championships and Southport Flower Show - if you time your trip right, it seems like there's something for everyone. Southport is rich in its unique offering; the town claims the most independent eateries and stores outside of London, as well as being predominantly dog friendly. Why not find out more amazing things about Southport?

If you're in town, come say "Hello", you'll probably find something you like in our store on the iconic Lord Street.
