They have to move with you – stretching, flexing, and working thousands of times a day without losing shape.

Back in the late 1970s, when we first started selling them, we bought from Somerset makers such as Burfields & Co in Martock – a region once home to more than 30 glove factories. Fewer than a handful remain today, and with them has gone a great deal of skill and tradition.

It was there that we learned the real art of glove-making: a craft demanding more precision, patience and understanding than almost any other leather product. Once a piece of leather is cut, there’s no turning back; every decision has to be made with care.

From those early days to today’s refined designs, our passion for proper glove-making has never wavered. This is the story of what makes a truly exceptional glove, and how seventy years of craft have shaped the standards we still hold ourselves to.

From Hide to Hand: The Craft That Makes the Difference

A great glove begins with expert selection. Each hide is inspected for texture and stretch, matched in pairs so both gloves behave identically in wear. We use lightly dyed aniline leathers – too fine to disguise imperfections – because natural variations tell their own story.

Every cut, stretch and stitch that follows respects the natural grain – no two hides are ever quite the same, and that’s what gives each pair its character.

The leather is then dampened and worked by hand over the curved edge of the bench, stretching it gently along the grain. This pre-shaping ensures it holds form when worn – why our gloves truly fit like a glove.

Each pair contains more than 15 cut pieces: the trank (main body), thumb, narrow fourchettes between the fingers, and small diamond quirks that give movement. They’re stitched together using a half-pique seam (neat on the outside, smooth on the inside) before being lined. For everyday warmth and quick-dry practicality, we favour fleece.

Traditional makers once measured every cuff by ‘Button Length’ – a small but vital detail that keeps warmth sealed in. Button Length refers to the distance, in inches, from the base of the thumb to the edge of the cuff – a standard that once defined glove quality. Too short, and the glove fails to cover the wrist fully, allowing warm air to escape; too long, and it restricts movement. Getting it right is both a science and an art – one of many precise hallmarks of proper gloving that we still uphold today.

Spotting Quality at a Glance

There are a few simple details that separate a great glove from an average one:

Grain runs fingertip to cuff – ensures the leather stretches naturally with the hand rather than across it, preventing distortion and helping the glove retain its shape.

Button Length ≥ 2½ inches – gives full wrist coverage to keep warmth in and drafts out; anything shorter often signals cost-cutting.

Angled fourchettes, not straight-cut – follow the natural curve of the fingers for a closer, more comfortable fit.

Even stitching, no heavy coating – neat, consistent seams indicate skill; heavy finishes usually hide lower-grade leather.

Leather feels supple, not floppy – good leather should have structure and spring, flexing easily but never feeling limp.

Caring For Your Gloves

Let gloves dry naturally and avoid direct heat. Use the right Lakeland Leather Care product for the finish. With a little care, your gloves will soften, mould to your hands, and last for seasons to come.

Why We Still Choose the Harder Path

Seventy years on, many retailers look for ways to cut corners – faster production, cheaper materials, less time in the making. But that’s never been our way. A glove that’s properly made demands more time, more skill, and more patience. And when you slip it on, you feel the difference immediately.

At Lakeland Leather, we’ll always believe in making things properly: leather that breathes, fits, and lasts; craftsmanship you can feel every time you pull your gloves on. It’s a philosophy that guided us for seventy years – and one that will continue to shape everything we make.

Explore Men’s Gloves | Explore Women’s Gloves

Crafting the Perfect Glove At Lakeland Leather, we’ve learned that of all the things we make, leather gloves are

[1,13

post-556","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-all","category-leather-experts
["GET
